When we started the project of fixing our roof, we were told by our roofing company that before any work could begin, we first had to get rid of the drywood termites that were living in our attic. We immediately began treatment by hiring this company:

Before the fumigation could begin, we were required to remove anything edible from our home, which we had to distribute between a friend’s house and my office refrigerator. The process was a bit of a hassle as about 95% of the food items in our kitchen and back room needed to be removed from the house. Luckily, we had plenty of cooler bags and ice packs to keep the food fresh during transport.
If you are fumigating for termites, be prepared to remove all your food in your fridge, pantry and cupboards before the fumigation begins and then putting it back once it is complete – this takes time!
After two days, the fumigation was complete. We were told that we may experience some stinging in our eyes once we were back inside. This is due not to the chemicals used to fumigate for termites, but instead because of a specific spray used inside to ward off home introducers who would like to take advantage of an unattended house.
Once the roofing process began, the crew doing the job made an unfortunate discovery…termites on the roof! When we contacted the termite company, they suspected that it was a different type of termite called the subterranean termite. We had to schedule a second fumigation, which was much less invasive and only took 3 hours, during which we could not be home.
Be sure to check for both drywood and subterranean termites if you are planning a fumigation.
The company was nice enough to give us a very reasonable discount for the second fumigation as they were regretful of not detecting both types of termites during the initial inspection.
